Essential blepharospasm is an idiopathic disorder characterized by progressive involuntary, uncontrollable, spasms of the orbicularis oculi and upper facial muscles. It may be either intermittent or persistent. Blepharospasm literally means spasm of the eyelid, and while it may be an isolated condition, most patients also have or will develop contraction of other facial, oromandibular, or cervical muscles.
