Our
eyelids are crucial for the protection
of the eyes and abnormalities of contour,
strength, or position can dramatically
affect ocular comfort and vision. Ptosis
is a condition where the eyelids are
droopy due to abnormalities of the internal
eyelid structures. Entropion (ectropion)
is a condition where the eyelid turns
in (out). Eyelid laxity can cause them
to turn out, turn in, or even completely
flip inside-out. Eyelids can also retract
and incompletely close during blinking
or during sleep causing chronic exposure
of the eye. This is just a brief description
of eyelid malposition disorders that
can have a multitude of underlying causes.
Fortunately, oculofacial plastic surgeons
best understand the underlying anatomy
and causes of these problems enabling
us to restore the eyelids to their proper
location, tone, and contour to the eye.
