Facial
and eyelid anatomy are very complex.
Oculofacial plastic surgeons are uniquely
trained to address orbital trauma and
eyelid structural damage. The anatomy
of the orbit and eyelids are amongst
the most complicated in the body. Our
in depth understanding of this anatomy
equips us to restore damaged tissues
and bone back to their proper orientation
and function. Additionally, our experience
as former eye surgeons gives added understanding
and protection to the eye and vision
during these complex repairs. Additionally,
a multidisciplinary approach is often
times implemented when there is concurrent
craniofacial trauma.
Both trauma and surgery can result in
scarring. Wounds of the face or eyelids
may appear unsightly and impair the
normal functioning of the eyelids. This
can cause the eye to be irritated and
even affect vision and long-term ocular
health. These various functional problems
include: deformed eyelid margins; incomplete
eyelid blinking or closure; droopy eyelids;
excessive tearing and tear overflow
onto the cheeks; and irregularities
of the eyelashes or eyebrows. Fortunately,
most of these functional and appearance
problems may be fixed or improved with
oculofacial plastic surgery and various
scar treatments.
